Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and pressure to ease and release tension deep in your muscles. It is a massage technique that works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments - deep finger pressure that concentrates on particular areas, and follows or goes across the fibres of muscles and tendons. Deep tissue massage is a blanket term that describes a number of different therapies, and is often used medically by physiotherapists, chiropractors and so on.Deep tissue massage is a particularly effective massage for people with muscular pain.

Deep tissue massage helps to refresh and relax muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow around your body. This gets rid of toxins in very sore and strained muscles, which helps them to strengthen and heal. Deep tissue massage is often used to treat people who are recovering from accidents, and for sports injuries as it increases blood circulation in muscles that are underused, relieves chronic muscle tension throughout the body, and can also break down scar tissue and "knots" deep in the muscles. The aim of deep tissue massage is to tackle particular physical, muscular problems.

In Sweden, "Swedish massage" is simply known as "classic massage". And that is exactly what it is, a classic treatment which represents the western standard for massage.  The five main techniques used in Swedish massage are stroking and gliding; kneading; rubbing; tapping or pounding; vibration -- are probably what spring to mind when you think about a "typical" massage.

The various Swedish massage techniques are designed to improve your circulation, soothe your muscles and make you feel more relaxed.

Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This adjustment of pressure makes it an ideal massage for relaxation. Besides the calming benefits, Swedish massage is thought to be good for:

  • easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins

  • improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood

  • helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple

  • reducing emotional and physical stress.

Afterwards, you'll probably feel quite relaxed and maybe even sleepy, so give yourself plenty of time to unwind. Savour the feeling of having every muscle in your body gently stretched and smoothed out.

Massage involves working the soft tissue of the body, to ease day-to-day stresses and muscular tension, and promote relaxation. It helps to increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the treated areas and can also be used in support of other therapies to assist in the rehabilitation of muscular injuries.

There are many different types of massage. Some of these – such as Indian head massage and remedial  massage - concentrate on specific areas of the body, or problem areas where the therapist can adapt the pressure and techniques used to suit the client’s individual needs and preferences.

Before treatment, your therapist will provide a full consultation, asking you various questions about your health and lifestyle, to ensure treatment is right for you. The treatment involves the therapist directly massaging your skin, with an organic nourishing oil which will generally be used to provide a free-flowing massage, and towels carefully placed to ensure your modesty and keep you warm and comfortable throughout the treatment.

Massage is used by people for a variety of reasons. Some use it to simply relax and unwind, while others have regular massage to help them manage or cope with specific physical, mental or emotional problems. Many aspiring and professional athletes have massage before and after training and competing, in order to stay in optimum condition and aid recovery.

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that massage can be effective in helping to treat certain chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia and low back pain. In guidelines produced in 2009 by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), manual therapies - including massage – are recommended for the early management of persistent, non-specific low back pain.

Pregnancy massage is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care and a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. It relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and oedema (or swelling). In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension which aids in better sleep and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes. Extra care is taken to ensure pregnancy massage clients are comfortable. Sideline positioning with supportive, soft cushions is used to alleviate the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the pressure of massage techniques are applied. Pregnancy massage offers a number of benefits, and it's always a good idea to discuss any everyday symptoms you'd like to see relieved. Those might include:

  • Headaches (relieved by massage focusing on the head, neck and shoulders), maintaining optimal levels of stress relief and reducing the chances of migraines or tension headaches by relaxing trigger points and muscle spasms.

  • Muscle tension created by carrying the extra weight of a baby can be relieved by encouraging blood flow to the afflicted areas. This provides more nutrient-rich oxygen and also increases the flow of lymphatic fluid, which sweeps away toxins and metabolic waste.

  • Fatigue, backaches, leg cramps and swelling can all be relieved through various types of massage for pregnant women.

  • The ordinary aches and pains of pregnancy are countered by the release of serotonin, your body's natural anti-pain chemical, which is stimulated by massage.

While a massage can't promise that your newborn will sleep through the night, it can provide you with a better night's sleep both during pregnancy and afterwards.
